TrueNAS - migrating to a new server. How to effectively prepare a backup and recover your system no matter if you are planning to move to a more powerful machine or you just had a problem with the system disk, motherboard, power supplies, but the data disks are intact. I will cover how to recover full functionality by moving data disks to a new server.
Because the fact that we are copying our data to the NAS is one thing and the fact that the NAS itself can turn over is another and not at all improbable.
I prepared the material on the basis of TrueNAS CORE version 13 U1 in July 2022 and this is not yet a production version, but the idea is the same so it doesn't really matter. To effectively prepare for the transfer of functionality, we must keep in mind that the whole thing consists of two elements to be copied. The first is the configuration backup of TrueNAS itself. There the information and addresses, configured services, attached disks, users, the whole configuration are stored. The second element is the data disks, our pools where all our data is stored. Also the data of our plug-ins like nexcloud or others.
Just as for the security copy of TrueNAS itself you just have to click a button. Here, in general, not much changes and often you can even get along with a manual backup, so in the case of data, here changes generally happen in practice on the fly and the data can be very, sometimes very, much and it is hard to imagine making a manual copy of the data itself. In this case, it may be necessary to replicate the data from the pools to another server, preferably in another location, I have done material on this subject https://eonea.pl/truenas-replikacja-cos-wiecej-niz-backup/
